In South Kensington alone you have the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Science Museum — all within five minutes’ walk of each other. Add the British Museum in Bloomsbury and the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square, and you have a cultural programme that would take months to exhaust.
Specialist Museums Worth Knowing
Beyond the giants, London has extraordinary specialist museums: the Sir John Soane’s Museum in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, the Wellcome Collection in Euston, the Museum of London Docklands, the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden.
Planning Your Visit
Weekday mornings are quieter. Most museums are open until 21:00 one evening per week — the British Museum on Fridays, the V&A on Fridays. Pre-booking a timed entry is now common even for free admission, so check before you go.
