Waterloo Bridge — opened in 1945 — is widely regarded as the one that offers the finest views of London. Looking west from its centre you can see the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Bridge. Looking east, the dome of St Paul’s and the City skyline. At sunset, it is hard to beat.
Built by Women
Construction took place during the Second World War, when most male workers were away fighting. The bridge was built predominantly by women workers — a fact commemorated in a small plaque. It is sometimes called “The Ladies’ Bridge” in their honour.
The South Bank Connection
The south end of Waterloo Bridge drops you directly onto the South Bank, home to the National Theatre, BFI Southbank, and within easy walking distance of the Tate Modern. The north end connects to the Strand and Covent Garden.
