Camden Town, on the Regent’s Canal in north London, has been a centre of alternative culture since the punk and rock scenes of the 1970s and 1980s. The market, the music venues, and the weekend crowds make it one of London’s most visited areas — and, for some, one of its most overwhelming.
The Market
Camden Market is actually several interconnected markets covering the canal, the stables, and the lock. The Stables Market — in converted horse stables and catacombs — is the most interesting architecturally. Food stalls from every cuisine feed the crowds at weekends. Vintage clothing, records, and alternative fashion fill the rest.
The Regent’s Canal
The Regent’s Canal runs from Little Venice in the west to Limehouse in the east, passing through Camden Lock, Regent’s Park, and Hackney. The towpath is one of London’s finest walks — away from traffic, past houseboats and Victorian warehouses, through the city’s back garden.
